Reading Notes: The Life Of Buddha Part Three

Mahaprajapati us Admitted to the Community
The Queen, Mahaprajapti wanted to relinquish her royal life and live with the Buddha and others in their righteous community. She tried several times to ask the Buddha for admittance into the city, but he refused her each time. After some time, Ananda was able to convince Buddha to allow her and other women into the community. However, the Buddha then declared that their true faith would only last half as long as it would have if they had not allowed women in.

The Buddha Exposes the Imposters
Hermits arrived at the city and were trying to sway people away from the Buddha's message. The Buddha was informed of this and commanded that a hall be built in seven days that he will compete against them at. While the hall was being built, one of the hermits deceived the King and made him cut his brother's hands and feet off. However, the Buddha was able to use his disciple to heal him. The Buddha then faced the hermits and defeated them. He left up into the sky in order to teach his mother, Maya.

Suprabha
The Buddha began teaching girls the law. Among them was the girl Suprabha, a beautiful daughter to a prominent citizen of Cravasti. She decided to not take a husband and instead went to Jeta's peak to learn from the Buddha. She did but after some time one of her suitors saw her and planned to rape her. As he and his friends attempted to do that, Suprabha thought towards the Buddha and she levitated up and away from them. (I was not a fan of the direction of this story at all).

Virupa
Virupa was an unattractive girl born to the King. He had her married to Ganga without him being able to see her face. After he saw that she was ugly, he was embarrassed by her and kept her locked in their house. Virupa grew so depressed that she tried to kill herself. The Buddha sensed this and went to her and saved her life. He also made it to where she was one of the most beautiful women in the world. Ganga came back and saw her and they lived happily ever after. (Not a fan of the ending on this either).

Sinca's Deceit
The evil hermits enlisted Sinca in their plot to discredit the Buddha. Sinca tried to convince everyone that the Buddha slept with her and got her pregnant. She confronted the Buddha when he was teaching the law and tried to discredit him. Indra saw this happen and four gods took the forms of mice and revealed her treachery. She was beaten by the Buddha's disciples and was engulfed in flames and died.
