Reading Notes: Narayan's Ramayana Part C

Ravana kidnaps Sita (pp. 85 - 89)
-Ravana tries to talk himself up while in disguise to Sita
-Sita talks trash about Ravana and he becomes angry and shows his true form
-He abducts Sita, but due to a curse, cannot physically touch her without her consent
-Jatayu attempts to free Sita
-Jatayu first tries to reason with Ravana before directly attacking him
-Ravana takes the attack at first, but the pulls out a magical sword and mortally wounds Jatayu (pg.89).

Rama meets Hanuman and Sugreeva (pp. 90 - 96)
-Hanuman appears before Rama and Lakshmana in the form of a scholar
-Hanuman shows his true form and brings the two to Sugreeva
-Hanuman recounts the story of Sugreeva's life
-The story of Sugreeva and Vali is explained (pp. 92 - 94)
-Hanuman realizes that Rama is Vishnu incarnate
-Vali's curse is explained (pp. 95 - 96)

Sugreeva fights Vali (pp. 96 - 105)
-After becoming emotional at receiving Sita's jewelry, Rama gets the help of Sugreeva and Hanuman to rescue her
-First they decide that they must defeat Vali
-Sugreeva confronts Vali and the fight begins
-Vali is close to killing Sugreeva when Rama shoots an arrow through his chest
-Vali sees that the arrow is Rama's and chastises him for getting involved in their affairs
-Rama rebuttals by saying everything Vali had done after coming back from his fight with Mayavi (pg 92) was dishonorable
-Vali sees the error in his ways and advises Sugreeva how to rule before dying

Week 12 Storytelling: Words Heeded

The king had kept their herd safe for years and years under his watchful eye. This world carried many dangers for their kind and if they weren’t careful, death would find them in the blink of an eye. When the cold winds started to fade away and the suns warmth once again covered the land, the king knew it was time. Their herd had a powerful desire for the crops that the humans grew each year. Inevitably, some of the foolish deer in their herd would wander into their fields and get caught by the traps that the humans set for them. After the king’s own brother was lost to the humans, he decided to enact a plan to save the lives of his herd. When the crops started to become ripe, the king would split the herd into thirds. Each herd would go far away from the human settlements and stay there until the humans had finished their work with their crops. E
